Virtual Learning Environments

Introduction to Online Learning with Moodle

Overview

Special software designed for classroom management is now available to educators in many forms. Online learning tools exist in many forms, including inside course and learning mangement software packages such as Blackboard, WebCT, Moodle and others.

The term 'virtual learning environment' or 'VLE' is used to describe a flexible, interactive online space for communicating, collaborating and creating active learning experiences. A VLE pulls together all of the interactive learning tools so that teachers and students can share artifacts, information, and community.

In this activity you will explore your understandings of onine learning tools and consider how they can work together in virtual learning environments.

Objectives

  • identify existing knowlege about online learning tools
  • develop questions to explore throughout the workshop

  • Consider what you saw in the clip that stimulates your prior knowledge of online learning tools.

KWL Database (make KWL a zip file that teachers can download)

  • In your course, go to Topic 2: Virtual Learning Environments. Click on the KWL Database.
  • Submit your contributions to a class KWL chart about VLEs. For more information on KWL see What is KWL?

Comments

  • With your workshop colleagues, query the KWL database by using the Search tab.
  • Review the responses for each column (K, W, and L). When you identify common themes, try searching that word in the Item box.
  • Identify key questions in the Want to Learn column that can be explored throughout the day.
  • Add comments on items indicating your reflections. (Something needs to be added so that you can easily know about and view comments)
