Moodleographies Activity

Overview

This moodleography provides some information about the use of forums in your online or blended courses. There's also a wee bit of information about our top five book recommendations for the eTeacher library.

About Me

Introduction

Click the itty bitty blue Play link or click the link underneath which takes you to the screencastomatic site and may take a wee bit of time to load or you may not be able to access from school so there is also an .m4v file.

Here it is as a vodcast file which is known as .m4v

My Moodle Story

About my classroom

My Moodle classes are for teacher professional development. This moodleography is based on the class I created for IDEAL-NM eTeacher preparation where the teachers will not be developing a course, rather they are teaching existing Aventa courses (Blackboard & Elluminate) or courses created by NM course developers.

Moodle activites featured

  • Forum aka Discussion in WebCT or Blackboard

How it worked

Activity

WHO IS THE ONLINE STUDENT? 2-3 hours. 10 points.

  • Virtual Tour. 1 hour.
  • Discussion/Forum: Stand Where You Stand. 1 hour. 10 points.
    • Consider the following claim and questions. Spend 10 minutes writing or typing your viewpoint:
      • Due to the technology advancements and different types of interactions that students are accessing at earlier and earlier ages, today's students and incoming students actually "learn" differently.
      • Do you agree that today's students actually "learn" differently?
      • Do you disagree that today's students actually "learn" differently?
    • Now Stand Where You Stand by going to the forum in this module, titled, yes, you guessed it, Stand Where You Stand, and posting your viewpoint. There are four places for you to "Stand," - Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree. Note: You can post your viewpoint in writing, with a hellodeo, or an audio file using audacity & lame. Voki is not recommended because it's only a minute and I'm sure you need more than a minute to promote your viewpoint.
    • Review the posts of your colleagues with different standpoints and let them know if they have or have not changed yours.
    • See eTeachers Discussion Rubric for the point breakdown.

Challenges

I'm pretty experienced with forums so I really didn't have significant challenges. I do have difficulty with forums and the gradebook. And my challenge with the moodleography of this activity was how to provide the video file. It was a cinch to create with http://screencast-o-matic.com but it was almost 10 minutes long and as an .mov file, 129mb in size. One problem we face is that many tools are blocked at school such as screencastomatic so I provided it as a link but also I dropped the .mov file into my iTunes and with the Advanced option, created a file that can be podcast, an .m4v which is only about 20mb but also a bit difficult to see the details.

Reflections

This activity is in its 4th iteration and has stood the test of time. Maybe the eTeachers who teach the course for us, have some thoughts on this though.

Other reflections I might make could be related to usability and accessibility. For example, I taught a course where I utilized several podcasts and I had a deaf student. For one podcast, I used the site http://castingwords.com to create a transcript which was actually beneficial to other students who liked having audio and text. For another podcast, some of the students in the class helped me create the transcript in a google doc. I broke it up into time segments and for extra credit, students would take a time segment and transcribe.
