Preparing for the Workshop

Beginning of Season Update contact info and schedule workshops in RETA Workshop Database

Lab Email: Find and schedule an appropriate lab.

 

List of lab requirements for this particular workshop that will need to be included in email:

 

  1. Access to RETA Moodle and PBWiki websites
  2. Internet access for laptops (if instructors or partipants are bringing laptops from another network)

 

3 Weeks Prior Lab Confirmation Email:  email lab contact  to confirm lab  

2 Weeks Prior

Participant Email:  Email participants to confirm workshop location,  date, time; let them know of any  equipment or materials they should bring.

 

List of any required equipment or materials that participants should bring to workshop that will need to be included in email:

  1. *Create an account on RETA Moodle (link will be provided)
  2. other equipment / materials determined by instructor

 

*This may not be necessary if you do a batch upload of users.

 

2 Weeks Prior 

Add participants to your Moodle Class using the Quick Start Guide to Assigning Roles.

  • Go to your course on RETA Moodle and click on Assign Roles in the administration panel. Click on the RETA Participants role. Search the student population to add them to your class.
  • Add your students to your course or use the .cvs spreadsheet to send to Holly to batch upload users (see Quick Start Guide to Assigning Roles).

Review workshop materials. 

Familiarize yourself with key ideas and required skill set.

Plan how you will run the workshop to give it your personal touch. You can add your notes in the Planning Notes section of the agenda, below). 

 

1 Week Prior

Print out Attendance, Reimbursement, Workshop Invoice, Workshop Evaluation, and any necessary forms from Instructor Resource list.

30 minutes prior to workshop

  • Arrive at lab to set up.
  • Place attendance sheet and any handouts at door.
  • Write name, workshop topic, agenda on board.
  • Demo the demonstration computer with the sites and media you will be using. Preload the PowerPoint for Show me the Moodle.

 

30 minutes

Introductions: names, familiarity with topic, reasons for  interest in Moodle, etc. Provide reminders on login information.

Virtual Learning Environments

  • Activate prior knowledge by playing the clip (which you can also download inside of your RETA Moodle course).
  • Demonstrate the KWL Database.
  • Ask participants to contribute to the KWL Database (depending on time 3-5 thoughts).
  • Query the KWL Database together and talk about how the L column will be addressed today. Explain that by adding comments to a KWL Database entry allows you to confirm your prior knowledge (ie: if item in K column turns out to be wrong, please add a comment reflecting this).
  • Discuss other ways to use a database with your students and other ways to achieve KWL with VLE tools.

Surveying the Landscape of Online Education

  • Discuss professional benefits of understanding current issues and trends.
  • Explain the modified jigsaw approach.
  • Demonstrate the forum.
  • Establish groups.
  • Observe and assist jigsaw activity.
  • Debreif Forum, model forum navigation on screen.

End of workshop
  • Ask participants to share something in the RETA Moodle Blog
  • Have participants fill out workshop evaluations in RETA Workshop Database

RETA Moodle user blogs are available thorugh the Blog Menu block in your course.
