Blocks integrate components of Moodle and the Internet. The more you understand about these components, the more the blocks will be meaningful. Start with what you understand and build on that.

Activating Moodle Blocks

  • Turn on Editing
  • Drop down menu
  • Hide/Edit/Delete
You will be able to activate Moodle Blocks.

Remember, just like other content in Moodle, you can always hide it from your students. If you start a block and you're not ready for students to see it yet, then hide it until you are ready.

Popular Blocks

  • Standard Blocks
  • Non-standard
  • Default blocks
You will be able to explain the purpose of popular standard Blocks.

About Non-Standard Blocks

Installing non-standard blocks will require assistance from your Moodle Administrators.

The HTML Block

  • Edit just like sections/topics (click on pencil)
  • Useful for Widgets / Embedding
You will observe the basic steps to implement a Del.icio.us Widget.

What is a widget? What is embedding?

What is del.icio.us?

Other ways to use the HTML Block

Resources for Cool Widgets:

If you use a widget that does not work, you may want to see if the provider allows you to select different widgets for different web platforms.

Often times the 'other' option or the 'website' option is the one that works best with Moodle. You can learn this by trying it out and being prepared to test it before it goes through for students.

Calendar Block

  • Linked to Upcoming Events
  • Linked to all activities with dates (assignments, etc)
  • Can include Site, Course, Group and Individual events
You will observe how to add the calendar block.

The calendar is easy to set up and can be a very useful communication tool for your students - it's a great block for Beginners!

RSS Feed Block

  • Related to blogs and other syndicated web content
  • May need assistance of your administrator to activate
You will observe how to add RSS feeds to a block in your course.

Think carefully about the choices you include. Unless you are the publisher, you will need to monitor content and/or rely on very reputable sources.

Come and see my wiki where you can access the Extending Moodle, Engaging Learners poster to see what kinds of widgets you can integrate into your blocks. http://hollyrae.pbwiki.com
