Assigning Roles QuickStart Guide

What does it mean to Assign Roles in Moodle?

Assigning roles is a way to select

  • what users are students in your class
  • what users are teachers in your class
  • who is 'visible' in your class and who is 'hidden'

Assigning roles for a course

You will not see 'assign roles' unless you are the Teacher of the course.

  1. Assigning a role

Assigning users the role of student i.e. enrolling them on the course
Assigning users the role of student i.e. enrolling them on the course "Student", "Teacher", "Course Creator" are some of the predefined roles that come with Moodle. The site administrator may have created additional roles.

    To assign a role:

  2. Choose the type of role you wish to assign. For example, if we wanted to assign a Student role to Martin, we'd choose "Student" from the list of roles.
  3. Once you have chosen a role, two lists appear: a list of users who currently have that role (Student Demo in the example), and a list of users who don't. We can select Martin in the second list, and use the left-facing arrow button to add Martin to the list of Students. Multiple users may be selected by holding down the Apple or Ctrl key whilst clicking on the users' names.
  4. Removing someone from a role is done by moving the user from the left column to the right.
  5. Hidden assignments

To hide which role a user is assigned to, click the Hidden assignments check box before assigning the role to the user. This feature is useful for example if you don't want everyone with teacher rights listed in the course description. This feature is also very useful for hiding system wide roles from everyone else on the site. Administrators and teachers will still be able to see the role assignment.

Why assign roles?

Using roles can allow administrators, other teachers and even parents or students to have access to the course in a new way. When setting any permissions it is best to check to see if the settings have created the results you were hoping for.

Can you assign roles on an individual assignment?

Yes.

When you go to an activity as the teacher, you will see a roles tab. This allows for you to set roles for each individual activity. Be careful with this and test out your settings before you give over roles to an individual student. Be aware that if you give students administrative rights over an activity or course they can kick you out of the course. However, if you have given this some thought and tested out the settings, using the roles can be a way to devote certain activities to limited groups of students and/or two allow students to act as facilitator or teacher at some point during the course.
